The OCU community is preparing to celebrate Islam Day Thursday, Sep. 10.

The purpose of Islam Day is to share the experience of celebrating Ramadan, the Muslim holy month, with the students on campus.

"This event seeks to raise awareness about the world's second largest religion, and remove misconceptions and stereotypical views about Islam," Mohamed Daadaoui, assistant professor of political science, said.

To promote religious and cultural tolerance at OCU, Islam Day encourages students to partake in interdenominational discussion and to celebrate diversity.

"The events of Islam Day will include several lectures and an interfaith panel discussion," Daadaoui said.

A dinner will also be hosted in which President McDaniel will be presented with an Oklahoma State Centennial Quran.

The iFast campaign will invite the campus to fast during the day.

An Islam Day table and collection box will be located by the caf entrance seeking donations for the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Students are encouraged to donate their lunch money.

Handouts and free t-shirts will be available from noon to 2 p.m.

Various lectures are scheduled in room 151 in Walker Center in Petree College of Arts & Science.

Razi Hashmi, Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, will speak from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and Daadaoui, will speak from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The "People of the Book: An Interfaith Dialogue between Islam, Christianity, and Judaism" lecture will be presented from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
